Milk and water are mixed in a container in the ratio 5 : 3. Then 16 ltr of mixture was drawn out and replaced by same quantity of milk. Now the present ratio of milk and water in the new mixture is 7 : 1. If 8 ltr of the mixture is again taken out from the container, then the quantity of milk in the mixture remaining is

Let the container hold V litres; water is unchanged by adding milk, so (3/8)(V − 16) = V/8, giving 3V − 48 = V and V = 24 litres (21 milk, 3 water after replacement). Removing 8 litres leaves 16 litres in the ratio 7 : 1, i.e. 16 × 7/8 = 14 litres of milk.
