In a 1000 meter race A wins by 19 seconds if he gives B a start of 40 meters. In the same race if A gives B a start of 30 seconds, then B wins by 40 meters. Then the time (in minutes) taken by B to run 5 km is

Let A and B take a and b seconds for 1000 m. From the first race 0.96b = a + 19; in the second, when B finishes A has run 960 m in b − 30 s, so 0.96a = b − 30. Substituting b = 0.96a + 30 gives 0.0784a = 9.8, a = 125 s and b = 150 s per km, so B needs 5 × 150 = 750 s = 12.5 minutes for 5 km.
