Article 340 empowers the President to appoint a commission to investigate the conditions of socially and educationally backward classes (such as the Kalelkar and Mandal Commissions); Article 342 concerns Scheduled Tribes, Article 344 the Official Language Commission and Article 339 control of the Union over the administration of Scheduled Areas.
