   "On behalf of" means as the representative of someone, in place of a person who cannot be there. The son had died ("laid down his life"), so his mother received his award on his behalf, as happens with posthumous gallantry awards. "In lieu of" means instead of, in exchange for ("leave in lieu of overtime"), so it would wrongly say the award replaced her son. "In the name of" means by the authority of or invoking someone ("in the name of the law"), and "for the sake of" means for the benefit or good of someone; neither means receiving something as his representative.
