PM1 is particulate matter with a diameter of less than 1 micron (micrometre); such ultra-fine particles escape the nose's filtering, reach deep into the lungs and can even enter the bloodstream. Particles larger than 10 microns are coarse and are largely trapped in the nose and throat, so (a), (b) and (d) do not describe PM1.
