New Zealand lies just west of the International Date Line (UTC+13 in December), while Hawaii (UTC-10) and Alaska (UTC-9) lie east of it, 23 and 22 hours behind. So for all but the last hour or two of New Zealand's 31 December it is still 30 December in both places; neither can be in 2024 while New Zealand, which is ahead of them, is still in 2023.
