Which one of the following statements with reference to the Nebular Hypothesis for the origin of Solar System is correct?

    1. The initiation of the nebular hypothesis can be considered as a diffuse, roughly spherical, slowly rotating expanding nebula
    2. As a result of rotation and expansion, a disk is formed with matter concentrated in the centre
    3. Expansion continues with the formation of the proto-Sun and the rings of material are left behind
    4. The material in the rings get condensed and form the planets that revolve in orbits around the Sun

    Show answer

Answer: (4) The material in the rings get condensed and form the planets that revolve in orbits around the Sun

In the Kant-Laplace nebular hypothesis a slowly rotating gaseous nebula cooled and contracted, spinning faster as it shrank and shedding rings of matter; the central mass became the Sun and the rings condensed into planets orbiting it, so (d) is right. Options (a)-(c) wrongly speak of an expanding nebula, whereas the hypothesis rests on contraction.
