Nearly all of India's coal reserves (about 98%) and its best bituminous coal lie in the Gondwana formations of the Damodar, Mahanadi, Son and Godavari valleys. The Deccan Trap is volcanic basalt, and the Vindhyan and Cuddapah systems are older sedimentary rocks without significant coal.
