Lord Mountbatten was the last Viceroy of British India and was in office when India became independent on 15 August 1947; he then stayed on as the first Governor-General of free India. Canning (first Viceroy, 1858), Curzon (1899-1905) and Hardinge II (1910-1916) were much earlier.
