An empty tank can be filled by pipe A in 4 hours, pipe B in 12 hours and pipe C in 6 hours. All the three pipes are opened as follows. Pipe C is opened at 6 a.m, pipe A at 7 a.m and pipe B at 8 a.m. If the tank was empty at 6 a.m, then the time at which the tank will be filled is

Rates per hour: A = 1/4, B = 1/12, C = 1/6. C alone fills 1/6 from 6 to 7 a.m. and C + A fill 1/6 + 1/4 = 5/12 from 7 to 8 a.m., so 7/12 is full at 8 a.m.; all three together fill 1/4 + 1/12 + 1/6 = 1/2 per hour, so the remaining 5/12 takes 5/6 hour = 50 min, i.e. the tank is full at 8.50 a.m.
