The speed of an express train is 90 kmph and the speed of a passenger train is 45 kmph. Express train stops for 2 min. after travelling a distance of 81 km every time and the passenger train stops for 3 min. after travelling a distance of 39 km every time. If both the trains start at the same time, the number of kilometers the passenger train travels by the time the express train covers 450 km is

The express train runs 450/90 = 5 h and stops after 81, 162, 243, 324 and 405 km, i.e. 5 stops of 2 min, so it takes 300 + 10 = 310 min. The passenger train covers 39 km in 52 min and then halts 3 min, i.e. 39 km per 55 min; in 310 min it completes 5 such cycles (275 min, 195 km) and runs 35 more minutes at 0.75 km/min = 26.25 km, giving 195 + 26.25 = 221.25 km.
