A rectangular track of 5 meters width is made round a circular field such that each of the inner side of the track touches the field at a point. If the area of the field is 61,600 square meters and the cost of forming the track is Rs. 100 per square meter, then the amount (in Rupees) required for forming the track is

πr² = 61,600 gives r² = 61,600 × 7/22 = 19,600, so r = 140 m. Each inner side touches the circle, so the inner square has side 2r = 280 m and the outer square 280 + 2 × 5 = 290 m; track area = 290² − 280² = 570 × 10 = 5,700 m², and the cost = 5,700 × 100 = Rs. 5,70,000. The Telugu version calls the field స్తంభం (pillar) and prints a stray "సెం." in "చ.సెం. మీటర్లు", but the area is 61,600 square metres, as in the English.
