A cantilever beam of span L, uniform flexural rigidity EI is subjected to a unit couple at its free end. The deflection at the centre of the beam is:

- L²/8EI

Answer: (2) L²/8EI
A couple M at the free end gives constant bending moment, so the deflection at distance x from the fixed end is Mx²/(2EI); with M = 1 and x = L/2 it is (L/2)²/(2EI) = L²/8EI (L²/2EI is the tip deflection).
