To obtain the correct volume using the trapezoidal rule, the prismoidal correction should always be

    1. Multiplied
    2. Added
    3. Subtracted
    4. Zero
    Show answer

    Answer: (3) Subtracted

The trapezoidal (average end area) rule usually overestimates the volume of earthwork compared with the prismoidal formula. The prismoidal correction is therefore subtracted from the trapezoidal volume to get the correct volume.
