TGPSC HMWSSB Manager 2015 Paper 2 · Question 130
Question 130 of the TSPSC Manager (Engineering), HMWSSB, 2015: Paper 2 (Civil Engineering) (1 November 2015). Try it first, then open the answer and explanation.
In a three hinged parabolic arch, the third hinge is located at the crown. The beam moment coinciding with H-moment indicates ______.
- Arch all along carries only radial shear.
- Arch all along carries only beam moment
- Arch all along carries only normal thrust.
- Arch all along carries only H- moment.
Show answer
Answer: (3) Arch all along carries only normal thrust.
In a three-hinged arch the net bending moment at any section = beam moment − H·y (the H-moment). If the beam moment diagram coincides with the H-moment diagram, the net moment is zero everywhere and the arch carries only normal (axial) thrust, as a parabolic arch does under a uniformly distributed load.
