TGPSC HMWSSB Manager 2015 Paper 2 · Question 110
Question 110 of the TSPSC Manager (Engineering), HMWSSB, 2015: Paper 2 (Civil Engineering) (1 November 2015). Try it first, then open the answer and explanation.
A pressure vessel in the form of a thin cylinder of 1m diameter and 1mm plate thickness is subjected to an internal fluid pressure of 0.2 MPa. The maximum shear stress in the material is ______.
- 50 MPa
- 0 MPa
- 25 MPa
- 37.5 MPa
Show answer
Answer: (3) 25 MPa
Hoop stress = pd/2t = 0.2 × 1000/(2 × 1) = 100 MPa and longitudinal stress = pd/4t = 50 MPa, so the maximum (in-plane) shear stress = (100 − 50)/2 = 25 MPa. The key takes this in-plane value; 50 MPa would be the absolute maximum if the near-zero radial stress were also considered.
