   The figure is a 4 × 4 grid with both main diagonals drawn. Along each diagonal, any of its 10 segments between grid points forms a right triangle with grid lines on either side, giving 20 triangles per diagonal and 40 in all. The two diagonals also form 8 triangles with apex at the centre, one with each of the 8 non-central grid lines, so the total is 40 + 8 = 48.
