Ajeet and Sujeet go for shopping in a mall. They use an escalator to move between various floors. The escalator moves at a constant speed. Ajeet takes nine steps for every five of Sujeet’s steps. Ajeet takes 30 steps to reach the top of the escalator, while Sujeet takes 20 steps to reach the top. If the escalator was turned off, how many steps would they have to take to walk up ?

In one time unit Ajeet takes 9 steps and Sujeet 5, so Ajeet is on the escalator for 30/9 units and Sujeet for 20/5 = 4 units. With escalator speed e steps per unit, 30 + (10/3)e = 20 + 4e gives e = 15, so total steps = 20 + 4 × 15 = 80.
