A tank has eight pipes, some of which fill the tank and the rest empty the tank. Each inlet pipe fills the tank in 8 hours while each outlet pipe empties it in 6 hours. If all the pipes are kept open when the tank is full, it takes 6 hours to drain the tank. How many pipes are inlet pipes ?

With i inlet pipes, (8 − i)/6 − i/8 = 1/6. Multiplying by 24: 4(8 − i) − 3i = 4, so 32 − 7i = 4 and i = 4.
