   Hunters "set a trap", and an animal "falls into a trap", so "trap" completes both halves of the sentence: "The elephant fell into a trap the hunters had set." A trap is a device or pit for catching animals, and figuratively a scheme to catch someone out. A "track" is a path or a line of footprints and cannot be set.
