  1. CAPF 2026 · P-I · Q57 · General Mental Ability · Reasoning

There is a question followed by two statements I and II: Question: If x and y are integers, can we find |x - y| uniquely? I. x² + y² = 25 II. x² - y² = 7 Which one of the following options is correct?

    1. The question can be answered using one of these statements alone, but cannot be answered using the other statement
    2. The question can be answered using either statement alone
    3. The question can be answered using both the statements together, but cannot be answered using either statement alone
    4. The question cannot be answered even using any of the statements

Answer: (4) The question cannot be answered even using any of the statements

    I alone allows (3, 4), (3, -4), (5, 0) etc., giving |x - y| = 1, 7 or 5; II gives (x - y)(x + y) = 7, so x = ±4, y = ±3 and |x - y| = 1 or 7. Even together x = ±4, y = ±3 still leaves |x - y| = 1 (x = 4, y = 3) or 7 (x = 4, y = -3), so no unique answer.
