Stratovolcanoes (composite volcanoes such as Mt Fuji and Mt St Helens) are tall, steep cones built of alternating layers of viscous, silica-rich lava and ash. Such felsic magma traps large amounts of gas under pressure, which escapes in violent explosive eruptions, so both statements are correct.
