Which one of the following statements with regard to greenhouse effect is correct?
- It can take place inside a glass chamber where no radiation can pass into it or pass back through it
- It can take place inside a glass chamber where long wavelength infrared radiation can pass through into it and short wavelength infrared radiation cannot pass back through it
- It can take place inside a glass chamber where short wavelength infrared radiation can pass through into it and long wavelength infrared radiation cannot pass back through it
- It can take place inside a glass chamber where all infrared radiation can pass into it or pass back through it

Answer: (3) It can take place inside a glass chamber where short wavelength infrared radiation can pass through into it and long wavelength infrared radiation cannot pass back through it
Glass lets in the Sun's short-wavelength radiation, which warms the surfaces inside; these warm surfaces re-emit long-wavelength (thermal) infrared radiation, which glass does not let back out, so heat is trapped. Greenhouse gases act in the same way in the atmosphere, so (c) is correct and (b) has the wavelengths the wrong way round.
