Typhoons are tropical cyclones (the name used in the north-west Pacific), and tropical cyclones form over warm oceans mainly between about 6° and 20° latitude on either side of the equator. They do not form right at the equator because the Coriolis force there is too weak, and 30°, 45-50° and 60° are subtropical or temperate latitudes.
