Major Stringer Lawrence, who commanded the East India Company's forces at Madras from 1748 and organised the sepoys into a regular, disciplined army, is called the "Father of the Indian Army". Ranjit Singh founded the Sikh kingdom of Punjab and Zorawar Singh was a Dogra general famous for his Ladakh campaigns.
