Jawaharlal Nehru was Prime Minister continuously from 15 August 1947 until his death on 27 May 1964, nearly 17 years, the longest tenure. Indira Gandhi served about 16 years over two spells, Manmohan Singh 10 years and Vajpayee about 6 years in all.
