The Fohn is the textbook dry wind: air that has lost its moisture on the windward side of the Alps warms adiabatically as it descends the leeward slopes, arriving warm and very dry. Monsoons are moisture-laden, and the Sirocco, though dry over the Sahara, picks up moisture crossing the Mediterranean and reaches southern Europe as a humid wind, and the Bora is known mainly as a cold, gusty wind of the Adriatic.
