Dadabhai Naoroji made the first estimate of India's national income for 1867-68 (about Rs 20 per head) in his work "Poverty and Un-British Rule in India". V.K.R.V. Rao later made the first scientific estimate (1931-32), and P.C. Mahalanobis chaired the National Income Committee of 1949.
