The ratio of the capacities of 3 containers is 3 : 2 : 1. Each container upto their maximum capacity is filled with a mixture of milk and water. The ratios of milk and water in the mixtures of 3 containers are 7 : 5, 5 : 3, 1 : 3 respectively. One liter of mixture from each of the three containers is taken out and they are mixed in a new container. Let the ratio of the milk and water in new mixture is x : y. If entire mixture from each of the containers with fullest capacities is mixed in another new container then the ratio of milk and water is p : q. Then xp : yq =

One litre from each gives milk 7/12 + 5/8 + 1/4 = 35/24 and water 3 − 35/24 = 37/24, so x : y = 35 : 37. Taking volumes 3, 2, 1 gives milk 3(7/12) + 2(5/8) + 1/4 = 13/4 and water 6 − 13/4 = 11/4, so p : q = 13 : 11; hence xp : yq = 35 × 13 : 37 × 11 = 455 : 407.
