   Treating the 4 × 4 grid as made of squares (the figure is drawn stretched sideways), there are 16 + 9 + 4 + 1 = 30 upright squares. The slanting lines form a large tilted square (joining the mid-points of the sides) split into 4 smaller tilted squares, which adds 5, so the total is 35. (TSLPRB's final key also gave the mark to candidates who left this question unanswered.)
