A goes 500 meters straight from his house. He turns to his left and walks 1 km. He then goes 1½ km after turning to his right to reach his office. If his office is located in North - East direction from his house, then the direction in which A started moving initially from his house and the shortest distance from his house to his office is

Starting East: 0.5 km East, a left turn gives 1 km North, a right turn gives 1.5 km East, so he ends 2 km East and 1 km North of the house, i.e. on the North-East side; the shortest distance is √(2² + 1²) = √5 km. Starting North would leave him North-West of the house.
