   Fill in the blank with an appropriate form of the verb given in brackets to make it a meaningful sentence. I ______ (pull) out my calculator before I added up all the money.

   Answer: (1) Had pulled

   Of two past actions, the one that happened earlier takes the past perfect: pulling out the calculator came before adding up the money, so "had pulled" is correct. "Had been pulled" is passive and does not fit the active subject "I".
