   Identify the correct form of the following sentence to be converted to direct speech. 'They told us that they would start the admission process the following day.'

   1. "We will start the admission process tomorrow," they told us.
   2. We told them, "They will start the admission process tomorrow."
   3. "We would start the admission process the next day," they told us.
   4. We told them, "We had to start the admission process tomorrow."

   Answer: (1) "We will start the admission process tomorrow," they told us.

   The speakers are "they" and the listeners "us", so the reporting part is "they told us"; inside the quotation the speakers refer to themselves as "we", "would" goes back to "will" and "the following day" goes back to "tomorrow". Option (3) keeps the indirect-speech forms "would" and "the next day", and options (2) and (4) reverse who is speaking.
