   Pipe A alone can fill a tank in 24 minutes. Pipe B alone can fill the same tank in 36 minutes. Pipe A alone is opened for x minutes and Pipe B alone is opened for y minutes to fill the tank in 30 minutes. Then |x - y| = (in minutes)

   The pipes run one after the other, so x + y = 30 and x/24 + y/36 = 1, i.e. 3x + 2y = 72. Putting y = 30 − x gives x = 12 and y = 18, so |x − y| = 6.
