Which one of the following angles can be set out with the help of French cross staff?

    1. 180°
    2. 90°
    3. 45°
    4. any angle
    Show answer

    Answer: (3) 45°

A French cross staff is an octagonal tube with sighting slits on all eight faces, so unlike the ordinary open cross staff (which gives only right angles) it can also set out 45° angles. It cannot set out any arbitrary angle; that needs an adjustable cross staff.
