TGPSC HMWSSB Manager 2015 Paper 2 · Question 150
Question 150 of the TSPSC Manager (Engineering), HMWSSB, 2015: Paper 2 (Civil Engineering) (1 November 2015). Try it first, then open the answer and explanation.
The principal reason for adopting pre-stressing cable profiles in flexure members as parabolic is due to the fact that ______.
- They need to resist both bending moments and shear forces in members.
- The strength of pre-stressing cables is maximum in parabolic shapes only.
- The profile of moment caused by self weight of structure is parabolic and to counter this, the cable profile also needs to be parabolic.
- Its a regular practice
Show answer
Answer: (3) The profile of moment caused by self weight of structure is parabolic and to counter this, the cable profile also needs to be parabolic.
Self weight and other uniformly distributed loads give a parabolic bending moment diagram, so a parabolic tendon produces a prestressing moment P·e(x) of the same shape that counteracts it at every section (load balancing). The strength of the cable itself does not depend on its profile.
