  1. Manager 2015 Paper 2 (Civil) · Q120 · Strength of Materials & Structural Analysis · Structural Analysis

A simply supported girder of span 10m is traversed by a 5m long UDL segment of intensity 10kN/m. The magnitude of absolute maximum moment in the beam is ______.

    1. 93.75kN.m
    2. 98.75kN.m
    3. 90.25kN.m
    4. 88.75kN.m
    Show answer

    Answer: (1) 93.75kN.m

    For a UDL shorter than the span, the absolute maximum moment occurs at mid-span with the load placed centrally: M = (W/4)(L − a/2), where W = 10 × 5 = 50 kN and a = 5 m. M = (50/4)(10 − 2.5) = 12.5 × 7.5 = 93.75 kN.m.
