TGPSC HMWSSB Manager 2015 Paper 2 · Question 117
Question 117 of the TSPSC Manager (Engineering), HMWSSB, 2015: Paper 2 (Civil Engineering) (1 November 2015). Try it first, then open the answer and explanation.
A fixed beam of span L and uniform flexural rigidity EI carries a vertical downward load W at its mid span. If a hinge is introduced in the beam at the location of the load, the deflection under the load is ______.
- WL³/12EI
- WL³/24EI
- WL³/16EI
- WL³/48EI
Show answer
Answer: (4) WL³/48EI
With a hinge at mid-span the fixed beam becomes two cantilevers of length L/2 meeting at the hinge, each carrying W/2 by symmetry. Deflection under the load = (W/2)(L/2)³/(3EI) = WL³/48EI.
