Pawan appeared for examination in 5 subjects. The maximum marks are the same for each subject. His marks in these 5 subjects are in the proportion 4 : 5 : 6 : 7 : 8 and overall he scored 60%. In how many subjects did he score less than 50% of the maximum marks ?

Let the marks be 4x, 5x, 6x, 7x, 8x and the maximum per subject be M. Then 30x = 60% of 5M = 3M, so x = M/10 and the scores are 40%, 50%, 60%, 70% and 80% of the maximum. Only one subject (40%) is below 50%.
