A child made a big cube by joining 64 smaller red cubes. He then painted the faces of the big cube in yellow colour, except one face. His teacher came and dismantled all the cubes and asked him to count the number of cubes whose two faces are yellow. If the child answered correctly, then how many cubes did he count ?

The big cube is 4 × 4 × 4. The 8 edges lying between two painted faces each have 2 middle cubes with two yellow faces (16), and the 4 corners on the unpainted face each have two yellow faces (4), giving 16 + 4 = 20.
