Question 97 of the UPSC CAPF (AC) 2026 Paper I (19 July 2026). Try it first, then open the answer and explanation.
Which one of the following effects best explains the high partial pressure of carbon dioxide causing haemoglobin to release oxygen in actively respiring tissues?
- Haldane effect
- Allee effect
- Bohr effect
- Eagle effect
(Haldane effect)
(Allee effect)
(Bohr effect)
(Eagle effect)

Answer: (3) Bohr effect
(Bohr effect)
In the Bohr effect, a high partial pressure of CO₂ (and the higher H⁺ concentration, i.e. lower pH, it produces) lowers haemoglobin's affinity for oxygen and shifts the oxygen dissociation curve to the right, so more O₂ is released in active tissues. The Haldane effect is the converse (oxygenation of haemoglobin lowers its capacity to carry CO₂), while the Allee and Eagle effects belong to population ecology and antibiotic action respectively.
