  1. CAPF 2026 · P-I · Q95 · General Science · Biology

Which one of the following statements about the catalytic conversion of nitrogen gas by nitrogenase enzyme in root nodules of leguminous plants is not correct?

    1. It needs ATP (Adenosine Tri-Phosphate) supply.
    2. It converts N₂ (nitrogen gas) to NH₄⁺ (ammonium ion) first.
    3. It needs hydrogen supply from reduced NADP (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide Phosphate).
    4. It needs aerobic condition for the process.

Answer: (4) It needs aerobic condition for the process.

Nitrogenase is extremely sensitive to oxygen and works only under anaerobic (low-oxygen) conditions; in root nodules the pink pigment leghaemoglobin mops up oxygen to protect it, so the statement that it needs aerobic conditions is the incorrect one. The enzyme does need ATP (about 16 ATP per N₂) and reducing power to convert N₂ to ammonia, which is present as NH₄⁺ in the cell.
