   The ozone hole forms over Antarctica every southern spring (September-October): polar stratospheric clouds in the extremely cold, stable polar vortex convert chlorine compounds (from CFCs) into active forms that destroy ozone once sunlight returns. The Arctic vortex is warmer and weaker, so ozone thinning there is smaller and irregular.
