Which one of the following statements about natural selection is not correct?

    1. Natural selection can only occur if there is no variation amongst members of the same species.
    2. Over time, natural selection can increase the frequency of adaptations that are favourable in a given environment.
    3. Species tend to overproduce beyond what the environment can support.
    4. Mutation, meiosis and sexual reproduction cause variation between individuals of a species.

Answer: (1) Natural selection can only occur if there is no variation amongst members of the same species.

Natural selection acts on variation: if members of a species did not differ in heritable traits there would be nothing to select, so (1) is the incorrect statement. Overproduction of offspring, the rising frequency of favourable adaptations over generations, and variation generated by mutation, meiosis and sexual reproduction are all correct parts of Darwinian theory.
