Consider the following statements : 1. GPS uses signals from a network of satellites to determine a position on the Earth. 2. The GPS receiver calculates the distances from satellites to triangulate the exact location by the use of latitude. Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

    1. 1 only
    2. 2 only
    3. Both 1 and 2
    4. Neither 1 nor 2

    Answer: (1) 1 only

GPS fixes a position on the Earth using signals from a constellation of satellites, so 1 is correct. The receiver works out its distance from at least four satellites from the signal travel time and fixes its position by trilateration; latitude and longitude are the result of this calculation, not an input to it, so 2 is wrong.
