  1. CAPF 2026 · P-I · Q29 · History · Medieval India

Which one of the following statements about the 'Amara-Nayaka' system is not correct?

    1. The Amara-Nayaka system was a major political innovation of the Vijayanagara Empire.
    2. The Amara-Nayakas were military commanders who were given territories to govern by the Raya.
    3. The Amara-Nayakas collected taxes and retained part of the revenue for personal use and for maintaining their contingents.
    4. The territories held by the Amara-Nayakas were hereditary and were therefore non-transferrable.

Answer: (4) The territories held by the Amara-Nayakas were hereditary and were therefore non-transferrable.

The last statement is wrong: amara territories were not hereditary in the Vijayanagara period, and the Raya kept the amara-nayakas under control by transferring them from one place to another from time to time (only in the 17th century did many nayakas set up independent kingdoms). The other three statements correctly describe the system: military commanders given territories by the Raya, who collected taxes and kept part of the revenue for themselves and for maintaining troops, horses and elephants.
