Question 99 of the UPSC CAPF (AC) 2025 Paper I (3 August 2025). Try it first, then open the answer and explanation.
Which one among the following statements is not correct?
- The reaction of methane and chlorine in sunlight produces hydrogen gas.
- Palladium catalyzes the addition of hydrogen gas on an alkene.
- Ethanol burns in oxygen to give carbon dioxide, water and releases heat and light.
- Unsaturated hydrocarbons burn with a sooty flame.

Answer: (1) The reaction of methane and chlorine in sunlight produces hydrogen gas.
In sunlight methane and chlorine undergo a substitution reaction that gives chloromethane and hydrogen chloride (CH₄ + Cl₂ → CH₃Cl + HCl), not hydrogen gas, so (1) is the incorrect statement. Palladium (or nickel) catalyses the hydrogenation of alkenes, ethanol burns to carbon dioxide and water with heat and light, and unsaturated hydrocarbons burn with a yellow sooty flame.
