Question 96 of the UPSC CAPF (AC) 2025 Paper I (3 August 2025). Try it first, then open the answer and explanation.
Which one among the following statements regarding gypsum is not correct?
- On heating gypsum at 373 K, it loses water molecules and becomes CaSO₄·H₂O.
- On mixing with water, plaster of Paris changes to gypsum.
- Plaster of Paris is used for supporting fractured bones.
- Although gypsum possesses water of crystallization, it is not a liquid at room temperature.

Answer: (1) On heating gypsum at 373 K, it loses water molecules and becomes CaSO₄·H₂O.
On heating to 373 K, gypsum (CaSO₄·2H₂O) loses part of its water and becomes plaster of Paris, calcium sulphate hemihydrate CaSO₄·½H₂O, not CaSO₄·H₂O, so statement (1) is wrong. The others are correct: plaster of Paris sets back into gypsum when mixed with water, it is used to support fractured bones, and gypsum is a crystalline solid even though it contains water of crystallization.
