   Xylem is a complex tissue because it is made of more than one type of cell (tracheids, vessels, xylem parenchyma and xylem fibres) working together as a unit; phloem is the other complex tissue. Parenchyma, sclerenchyma and collenchyma are simple tissues, each made of one type of cell.
