   Two trains A and B are entering a railway platform from opposite direction. The length of the platform is 300 m. The speed of B is two times the speed of A. The time taken by B to cross the platform is one-third of the time taken by A to cross the platform. If the sum of the lengths of A and B is 500 m, what is the difference in their lengths?

   1. 220 m
   2. 250 m
   3. 200 m
   4. 300 m

   दो रेलगाड़ियाँ A और B विपरीत दिशाओं से एक रेलवे प्लेटफॉर्म पर प्रवेश कर रही हैं। प्लेटफॉर्म की लंबाई 300 m है। B की चाल (speed) A की चाल से दोगुनी है। B द्वारा प्लेटफॉर्म पार करने में लिया गया समय A द्वारा प्लेटफॉर्म पार करने में लिए गए समय का एक-तिहाई है। यदि A और B की लंबाइयों का योग 500 m है, तो उनकी लंबाइयों में कितना अंतर है?

   Answer: (1) 220 m

   उत्तर: (1) 220 m

   Let A's speed be v (B's is 2v) and the lengths be x (A) and y (B). Then (300 + y)/(2v) = (1/3) × (300 + x)/v gives 3(300 + y) = 2(300 + x), i.e. 2x - 3y = 300; with x + y = 500 this gives y = 140 m and x = 360 m, so the difference is 220 m.
